Jyoti amge ( 15 tahun) dari nagpur, India, adalah gadis terkecil di dunia, menurut buku catatan rekor India. Dia lahir 16 desember 1993, dan sekarang berukuran sekitar 1 kaki, tinggi 11 inchi, dan berat 11 pound. dokter mengatakan bahwa tak mungkin bagi Jyoti untuk tumbuh lebih tinggi dari ukuran dia yang sekarang.

Mesin Wudhu Otomatis Seharga $4000

Kuala Lumpur - Mesin wudhu otomatis ini membantu untuk berhemat air. Diluncurkan dengan sensor otomatis, mesin wudhu ini dibanderol seharga US$ 3 ribu - US$ 4 ribu (Rp 28 juta - Rp 38 juta).

Adalah perusahaan Malaysia, AACE Technologies yang meluncurkan mesin wudhu itu di Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia seperti dilansir dari Reuters, Senin (1/2/2010).

Mesin itu berwarna hijau dan berornamen. Ada 2 bak di mesin itu, bak untuk cuci tangan di bagian atas dan bak untuk cuci kaki di bawah. Di tiap bak ada keran yang dilengkapi sensor. Air hanya akan keluar jika kaki atau tangan berada di bawah kran itu.

"Menghemat air adalah motivasi orang-orang untuk mengadopsi cara ini daripada cara konvensional, di mana banyak air yang terbuang," ujar Kepala AACE Anthony Gomez.

Alat itu juga bisa mengeluarkan suara ayat-ayat Alquran yang sudah direkam. Mesin wudhu itu memiliki tinggi 1,65 meter, dan membutuhkan 1,3 liter air untuk sekali wudhu dibandingkan dengan wudhu konvensional yang biasanya membiarkan kran air terbuka selama beberapa menit.

"Saat musim haji, 2 juta orang menggunakan 50 juta liter air per hari untuk wudhu. Kalau mereka memakai mesin ini, mereka akan berhemat 40 juta liter air per hari," imbuh Gomez.

Legenda "Pengisap Darah"

KOMPAS.com - Suatu kali sebuah jaringan televisi mengangkat laporan tentang pelintas batas gelap Meksiko-Amerika Serikat. Betapa para imigran gelap diancam bukan saja oleh polisi AS, melainkan juga oleh makhluk ”mitos” chupacabra.

Mereka yang diturunkan di Gurun Sonora, di perbatasan Meksiko-Amerika Serikat—yang luasnya sekitar 300.000 kilometer persegi serta dikenal tandus dan sangat panas itu—akhirnya meninggal dengan dua lubang di leher mereka. Sang anak tetap hidup karena bersembunyi di sebuah lubang pohon.

Korban diduga dibunuh hewan chupacabra. Hewan itu telah melegenda di sejumlah negara. Dari Puerto Riko di Amerika Selatan hingga Texas, dan Amerika Serikat. Sejumlah pemberitaan menyebut, chupacabra juga ada di Filipina.

Sosok chupacabra identik dengan kasus-kasus kematian ternak atau imigran gelap, dengan luka gigitan pada leher; darah korban habis diisap.

Istilah ”chupacabra” berasal dari bahasa Spanyol, ”chupar” berarti mengisap dan ”cabra” berarti kambing, karena sebagian besar ternak korban adalah kambing. Dalam bahasa inggris, artinya goat sucker.

Pertama kali istilah chupacabra atau El Chupacabra (bahasa Spanyol) dipakai pada dua harian di Puerto Riko, tahun 1992. Keduanya melaporkan kasus kematian massal ternak, mulai dari burung, kuda, dan yang terbanyak: kambing.

Setelah itu kasus sejenis banyak dilaporkan terjadi di Republik Dominika, Argentina, Bolivia, Cile, Kolombia, Peru, Brasil, dan AS. Sejak itu chupacabra tetap misterius: dibicarakan banyak komunitas, tetapi tak ada satu kesimpulan pun.

Bukan menjadi jelas, sosok misterius itu justru menjadi sasaran mode kalangan urban. Kaus dan topi bisbol bergambar rekaan chupacabra laris manis di kalangan komunitas hispanik dan Amerika.

Sosoknya disebut mirip coyote, rubah berambut lebat, tetapi ada juga yang menyebutnya seperti kanguru karena, katanya, bisa melompat tinggi.

Sejumlah seniman menggambarkan sosok chupacabra mirip gargoyle, makhluk bersayap dengan wajah menyeringai dengan gigi tajam siap menerkam.

Faktanya, setidaknya ada tiga ”sosok” gambaran chupacabra. Pertama dan yang umum: sosoknya berkulit keras hijau keabu-abuan dengan kaki belakang lebih panjang dari sepasang kaki depan. Bertaring besar dengan moncong seperti anjing. Bisa berdiri dan melompat seperti kanguru dan berbau belerang. Yang kedua, mirip dengan gambaran pertama, tetapi rambut kepalanya sedikit. Ketiga, sosoknya bak anjing liar, kepala sedikit berambut, soal rambut, tanpa gigi taring besar atau cakar.

Perjumpaan di Texas

Pada September 2009 CNN menurunkan laporan temuan bangkai binatang menyerupai coyote, milik seorang pemilik sekolah pembuat binatang awetan Blanco, di Texas. Si pemilik yang bernama Jerry Ayer mengaku mendapat hewan seberat 60 kilogram itu dari bekas muridnya, Lynn Butler. Hewan itu mati setelah memakan racun tikus di gudang.

Hewan itu bermoncong seperti anjing, berkulit keras tanpa bulu dengan kurap parah pada tubuhnya. Menurut Lynn, seperti dikutip Telegraph.co.uk, sejumlah ahli yang meneliti menduga itu adalah chupacabra.

Telepon Jerry terus berbunyi menanyakan hewan itu. Sebagian besar menduga itu chupacabra. ”Saya tidak tahu apa ini... saya tak tahu kalau saya punya binatang aneh,” kata Jerry yang kewalahan dengan berbagai permintaan wawancara.

Segera saja media lokal, nasional, bahkan internasional, mengutip apa yang ia sebut sebagai ”coyote cacat genetik” itu. Jerry sendiri tidak percaya akan adanya chupacabra.

Universitas Texas A&M telah mengambil contoh jaringan dari tubuh hewan itu untuk mengidentifikasi. Begitu pula sejumlah universitas lain.

Sebelumnya, CNN menayangkan video berdurasi 1 menit 36 detik yang direkam dari perangkat video mobil Deputi Sherif Dewitt County, Texas, yang dikemudikan Brandon Riedel, 8 Agustus 2008.

Pada rekaman itu tampak sosok menyerupai anjing berwarna hitam, bermoncong, dengan kuping berdiri, lari di jalanan berkerikil. Dua kaki belakangnya sedikit lebih panjang dari sepasang kaki depan.

Sejumlah pihak menduga binatang itu sama spesiesnya dengan coyote—termasuk atasan Brandon, Sherif Jode Zavesky.

Perjumpaan itu bukanlah yang pertama di Cureo, Texas. Pada tahun 2007 seorang pengusaha peternakan menemukan hewan mati yang ia duga chupacabra. Hasil tes DNA-nya menunjukkan, DNA-nya mirip coyote, tetapi tidak identik.

Pekerjaan rumah

Di tengah keyakinan keberadaan chupacabra, banyak yang menganggapnya sebagai mitos. Chupacabra disejajarkan dengan legenda manusia tinggi besar Yeti, ”Big Foot”, atau Nessie—monster Danau Loch Ness, Skotlandia.

Sejumlah kesaksian perjumpaan langsung atau rekaman video dinilai belum cukup. Nada minor menyebut chupacabra khayalan atau imajinasi, atau bentuk dari ”histeria massa”.

Seorang ahli patologi di Universitas UNAN, Leon, di Nikaragua menyimpulkan, hewan itu hanya seekor anjing dengan wujud ”tak biasa”. Penampilannya mencolok dengan morfologi (bentuk) amat berbeda dengan keturunan anjing liar biasa. Disebutkan, chupacabra memiliki karakteristik yang amat aneh.

Sebagian laporan mengklaim bahwa mata merah chupacabra mampu menghipnotis dan melumpuhkan korbannya—binatang yang menjadi mangsanya tersihir—sehingga diam saja ketika diisap darahnya. Agak berbeda dengan para pemangsa lainnya, chupacabra mengisap habis darah korbannya atau organ dalam mereka.

Di kalangan penduduk asli hutan hujan tropis Amerika Selatan berkembang kisah mistis ”manusia nyamuk”. ”Manusia nyamuk” ini mengisap darah hewan-hewan dengan hidung panjangnya.

Sejumlah orang yakin, chupacabra sebenarnya sama dengan ”manusia nyamuk”. Yang pasti, chupacabra masih menjadi ”pekerjaan rumah” bagi para ilmuwan.

Ternyata "Alien" Sudah di Bumi Membaur dengan Manusia

LONDON, KOMPAS.com — Ilmuwan Bulgaria menyatakan, alien atau makhluk luar angkasa sudah ada di bumi di antara kita. Mereka bahkan mengklaim sudah membuat kontak dengan makhluk cerdas di luar bumi itu.

“Alien sudah ada di antara kita, dan mengawasi kita sepanjang waktu,” kata ilmuwan Bulgaria, Lachezar Filipov, kepada media Bulgaria.

Mereka mengaku bekerja untuk memecahkan serangkaian simbol kompleks yang dikirimkan ke mereka. Kini mereka sedang mengerjakannya. Hal itu dikatakan oleh ilmuwan dari Space Research Institute milik Pemerintah Bulgaria.

Mereka mengklaim telah menjawab 30 pertanyaan yang telah dikirim alien. Lachezar Filipov, Wakil Direktur Space Research Institute dari Bulgarian Academy of Sciences, mengonfirmasi hasil riset itu.

Ia mengatakan, pusat riset telah menganalisis 150 lingkaran pada ladang (crop circles) dari seluruh dunia. Mereka yakin hal itu akan menjawab pertanyaan.

“Mereka tidak bermusuhan dengan kita. Mereka ingin membantu kita, tetapi kita belum berhasil menjalin kontak lansung dengan mereka.”

Mr Filipov bahkan mengatakan, Vatikan setuju bahwa alien itu ada.

Manusia tidak bisa menjalin kontak dengan alien melalui gelombang radio, tetapi melalui kekuatan pikiran.

“Ras manusia akan memiliki kontak langsung dengan alien 10-15 tahun mendatang,” katanya.

“Mereka kritis pada sikap amoral manusia yang mengganggu proses alami,” katanya.

Publikasi soal alien ini dilaksanakan di tengah debat mengenai kontroversi peran, kelayakan, dan reformasi Bulgarian Academy of Sciences.

Matahari Tidur, Bumi Membeku

Kincir angin bersejarah meneteskan air yang langsung membeku di Furtwangen, Black Forest, barat daya Jerman, Senin (12/1). Walaupun cuaca sudah lebih hangat daripada beberapa hari sebelumnya, udara pada malam hari tetap amat dingin.












JAKARTA, KOMPAS.com — Cuaca dingin ekstrem melanda kawasan lintang tinggi Bumi. Fenomena ini, antara lain, disebabkan oleh Matahari yang tidur berkepanjangan. Dampaknya menjadi terasa berat karena semakin diperparah oleh adanya pemanasan Bumi dan perubahan iklim global.

Sejak Desember lalu, suhu ekstrem terus melanda kawasan Lintang Utara, yaitu mulai dari Benua Amerika, Eropa, hingga Asia. Di Eropa, suhu dingin bulan lalu pernah mencapai minus 16 derajat celsius di Rusia dan minus 22 derajat celsius di Jerman. Bagi Inggris, ini suhu ekstrem terdingin dalam 30 tahun terakhir. Jalur transportasi ke Perancis lumpuh.

Amerika Serikat pun mengalami hal yang sama. Serbuan cuaca ekstrem ini berdampak pada kegagalan panen di Florida dan menyebabkan dua orang meninggal di New York.

Kejadian luar biasa yang berskala global ini diyakini para pengamat meteorologi dan astronomi berkaitan dengan kondisi melemahnya aktivitas Matahari yang ditandai oleh menurunnya kejadian bintik matahari atau sunspot.

Bintik hitam yang tampak di permukaan Matahari melalui teropong bila dilihat dari sisi samping menyerupai tonggak yang muncul dari permukaan Matahari. Tonggak itu terjadi akibat berpusarnya massa magnet di perut Matahari hingga menembus permukaan.

Akibat munculnya bintik hitam berdiameter sekitar 32.000 kilometer atau 2,5 kali diameter rata-rata Bumi, suhu gas di fotosfer dan kromosfer naik sekitar 800 derajat celsius dari normalnya. Hal ini dapat mengakibatkan badai matahari dan ledakan cahaya yang disebut flare.

Namun, yang terjadi beberapa tahun terakhir ini adalah Matahari nonaktif. Menurunnya aktivitas Matahari itu berdasarkan pantauan Clara Yono Yatini, Kepala Bidang Matahari dan Antariksa Lembaga Penerbangan dan Antariksa Nasional (Lapan), mulai terlihat sejak tahun 2000.

Para pakar astrofisika matahari di dunia menyebut tahun 2008 sebagai tahun dengan hari tanpa bintik matahari yang tergolong terendah dalam 50 tahun terakhir. Mereka memperkirakan beberapa tahun sesudah 2008 akan menjadi tahun-tahun yang dingin, kata Mezak Ratag, pakar astrofisika yang tengah merintis pendirian Earth and Space Science Institute di Manado, Sulawesi Utara.

Pengukuran kuat medan magnet bintik matahari dalam 20 tahun terakhir di Observatorium Kitt Peak Arizona menunjukkan penurunan. Dari medan magnet maksimum rata-rata 3.000 gauss pada awal 1990-an turun menjadi sekitar 2.000 gauss saat ini.

Penurunan sangat signifikan ini merupakan bukti bahwa hingga beberapa waktu ke depan Matahari masih akan pada keadaan malas, kata Mezak. Ia memperkirakan kalau aktivitas maksimumnya terjadi pada sekitar tahun 2013, tingkatnya tidak akan setinggi maksimum dalam beberapa siklus terakhir.

Matahari dan iklim

Saat matahari redup berkepanjangan, musim dingin ekstrem berpotensi terjadi karena Matahari—sumber energi bagi lingkungan tata surya—adalah penggerak mesin iklim di Bumi.

Sejak 1865, data di Lapan menunjukkan kecenderungan curah hujan berkurang saat Matahari tenang. Demikian pula musim dingin parah sejak akhir 2009 terjadi saat Matahari amat tenang (deep minimum) mirip kejadian 1995-1996, urai Thomas Djamaluddin, Kepala Pusat Pemanfaatan Sains Atmosfer dan Iklim Lapan.

Bukti keterkaitan dengan perilaku Matahari ini ditunjukkan oleh fenomena kebalikannya, yaitu musim dingin minim salju saat Matahari aktif pada tahun 1989. Musim dingin sangat panjang terjadi saat Minimum Maunder tahun 1645-1716 dan minimum Dalton awal 1980-an.

Kondisi serupa terjadi pada 1910-1914. Itu banyak dikaitkan dengan dinginnya laut pada musibah tenggelamnya Titanic pada April 1912. Normalnya, waktu itu sudah musim semi.

Sementara itu, Mezak berpendapat, pola aktivitas Matahari minimum saat ini mirip dengan kejadian tahun 1880, 1890, 1900, dan 1910. Jadi, siklus Matahari tidak hanya menunjukkan siklus sebelas tahun. Ada siklus lebih panjang dengan periode sekitar 100 tahun—siklus Gleisberg. Dalam catatan meteorologis, saat terjadi siklus itu, banyak cuaca ekstrem dingin, tetapi tidak seekstrem Minimum Maunder.

Cuaca dan GRK

Efek aktivitas Matahari minimum lebih banyak memengaruhi daerah lintang tinggi. Aktivitas Matahari sejak sekitar tahun 2007 hingga kini memperbesar peluang terjadinya gradien suhu yang besar antara lintang tinggi dan lintang rendah. Akibatnya, kecepatan komponen angin arah utara-selatan (meridional) tinggi.

Prof CP Chang, yang mengetuai Panel Eksekutif Monsun Badan Meteorologi Dunia (WMO), berkesimpulan, aktivitas monsun lintas ekuator yang dipicu gradien suhu yang besar di arah utara-selatan akhir-akhir ini meningkat secara signifikan dibandingkan dengan statistik 50 tahun terakhir.

Hal ini memperkuat dugaan, aktivitas Matahari minimum yang panjang berkaitan erat dengan cuaca ekstrem dingin. Di Indonesia, kejadian angin berkecepatan tinggi lintas ekuator menjadi penyebab utama munculnya gelombang-gelombang tinggi dari Laut China Selatan ke perairan Laut Jawa.

Adanya gas rumah kaca di atmosfer, lanjut Thomas, juga meningkatkan suhu udara yang menyebabkan perubahan iklim. Efek gabungannya cenderung meningkatkan kerawanan bencana terkait iklim, kata Thomas.

Teori pemanasan global mengatakan, atmosfer yang memanas membuat partikel-partikel udara menjadi semakin energetik dan berpotensi menghasilkan cuaca ekstrem. (YUNI IKAWATI)
